I Told You So. Many, Many Times.

“When the volatile political bedfellows of money and religion discover the honeymoon is over, the break-up will affect all of us.”

I wrote this in my column following George Bush’s, Dick Cheney’s, and Karl Rove’s victory in 2004.

Well, I told you so then and I tell you again now:

God and greed don’t mix.

And we are paying for it dearly.

Because the GOP continued to woo the religious right – complete with the fringe elements that spawned Donald Trump and Steve Bannon — and they had absolutely no intentions of fulfilling the promises they made to them.

The establishment arm of the GOP really believed the crazy relatives of their new bride would not be a problem. When the courting was hot and heavy, I had more than several folks make comments to me such as: “Those people aren’t going to make a difference. We just tolerate them for the vote,” as they plunged their hands into their very deep pockets.

But as we all know, when you marry, you marry the crazy family members, too.

Like it or not.

And now, we have what we have.

Not only have the nutty relatives stuck around, they are living in the big house.

And the GOP can’t do a damn thing with them.

Because their greed got us here.

A hunger for power got us here.

Hypocrisy got us here.

Dishonesty got us here.

And nothing is going to lift us out of it until the people who forged this relationship  admit they made a mistake and take action.

Because there’s only one solution for a bad marriage: divorce.

And we sure as hell need one of those right now.

About Pam Avery Printed

I graduated from the University of Georgia in 1972 with a major in journalism (public relations) and a minor in business (marketing). My experience for the last 40 years includes working in the corporate world (banking), the newspaper industry (advertising design and sales), owning and selling a restaurant, restoring and utilizing several old buildings on the property, teaching private dance and drama lessons for 20 years, free-lance writing for a national textile firm, publishing two children’s books, and ghost writing a book. My last tour of duty before beginning the current chapter was working as a reporter, photographer, and columnist for five weekly community newspapers. And now I teach...media writing at Columbus State University in Columbus Ga. I consider myself very fortunate--I get to be around intelligent, energetic and enthusiastic young people. What a joy. I believe the written word is one of the most powerful tools known to humankind. And now we have the ability to reach millions with a simple click of the mouse. Wow.

Amen, Pam! I just haven’t gotten to the point where I believe the Republican leadership will ever (1) put the good of the country above their own greed, (2) admit the were wrong, and (3) impeach him. With Bannon out there working hard to hand-pick new Congressmen combined with a weak Democratic Party, I’m afraid Congress will increasingly cave to the will of trump.

The White House is presently devolving into what Trump is most comfortable with – a no holds barred reality show. The fact that he still has an approval rating in the double digits boggles the mind as he is so clearly showing himself to be the charlatan he is. I am an Independent voter but I cannot see myself voting Republican in this political climate. The divorce needs to include the Tea Party, libertarian types, and any influence from Bannon and his ilk. They need to go start their own mean spirited little party and let the centrist conservatives and moderates have the GOP back.
